54766fb35f refactor(core): defer triggers cleanup (#52291)
This commit adds the logic to cleanup all triggers once defer block is triggered.

When a trigger is created, its cleanup function is stored alongside other defer block info. Prefetch and regular triggers are store in different slots, since we need to invoke them at different time.

fcc000e803 build: add targets for api doc generation (#52034)
This adds `generate_api_docs` targets to all of the packages for which we publish api reference docs. One known issue here is that any type information that comes from another package (e.g. router depending on core) currently resolve to `any` because the other sources are not available in the program. This can be tackled in a follow-up commit.

This commit also updates the install patch for `@angular/build-tools` to use the local version of compiler-cli.

8be2c48b7c feat(core): implement new block syntax (#51891)
Switches the syntax for blocks from `{#block}{/block}` to `@block {}` based on the feedback from the community.

Read more about the decision-making process in our blog: https://blog.angular.io/meet-angulars-new-control-flow-a02c6eee7843

The existing block types changed in the following ways:

**Conditional blocks:**
```html
<!-- Before -->
{#if cond}
  Main content
  {:else if otherCond}
    Else if content
  {:else}
    Else content
{/if}
<!-- After -->
@if (cond) {
  Main content
} @else if (otherCond) {
  Else if content
} @else {
  Else content
}
```

**Deferred blocks**
```html
<!-- Before -->
{#defer when isLoaded}
  Main content
  {:loading} Loading...
  {:placeholder} <icon>pending</icon>
  {:error} Failed to load
{/defer}
<!-- After -->
@defer (when isLoaded) {
  Main content
} @loading {
  Loading...
} @placeholder {
  <icon>pending</icon>
} @error {
  Failed to load
}
```

**Switch blocks:**
```html
<!-- Before -->
{#switch value}
  {:case 1}
    One
  {:case 2}
    Two
  {:default}
    Default
{/switch}
<!-- After -->
@switch (value) {
  @case (1) {
    One
  }
  @case (2) {
    Two
  }
  @default {
    Default
  }
}
```

**For loops**
```html
<!-- Before -->
{#for item of items; track item}
  {{item.name}}
  {:empty} No items
{/for}
<!-- After -->
@for (item of items; track item) {
  {{item.name}}
} @empty {
  No items
}
38c9f08c8d refactor(core): decouple effects from change detection (#51049)
Previously effects were queued as they became dirty, and this queue was
flushed at various checkpoints during the change detection cycle. The result
was that change detection _was_ the effect runner, and without executing CD,
effects would not execute. This leads a particular tradeoff:
* effects are subject to unidirectional data flow (bad for dx)
* effects don't cause a new round of CD (good/bad depending on use case)
* effects can be used to implement control flow efficiently (desirable)
This commit changes the scheduling mechanism. Effects are now scheduled via
the microtask queue. This changes the tradeoffs:
* effects are no longer limited by unidirectional data flow (easy dx)
* effects registered in the Angular zone will trigger CD after they run
  (same as `Promise.resolve` really)
* the public `effect()` type of effect probably isn't a good building block
  for our built-in control flow, and we'll need a new internal abstraction.
As `effect()` is in developer preview, changing the execution timing is not
considered breaking even though it may impact current users.
dbffdc09c2 fix(core): avoid duplicated code between entry-points (primary, testing, rxjs-interop) (#51500)
Fixes that there was code duplication between the primary entry-point,
the testing entry-point and the rxjs-interop entry-point.
This code duplication resulted in additional code size (really
neglibible here because rxjs-interop did not duplicate large parts of
core, and `testing` is not used in production).
On the other hand though, the duplication resulted in a subtle JIT
dependency tracking issue due to the `depsTracker` no longer being a
singleton. This caused test failures as in:
https://github.com/angular/angular/pull/51415.
d7d6514add feat(core): Add ability to configure NgZone in bootstrapApplication (#49557)
This commit adds a provider function that allows developers to configure
the `NgZone` instance for the application. In the future, this provider
will be used for applications to specifically opt-in to change detection
powered by ZoneJS rather than it being provided by default.
This API does _not_ specifically provide support for developers to define their own
`NgZone` implementation or opt in to `NoopNgZone` directly. Both of
these are possible today, but are effectively unsupported (applications
that use these are left to their own devices to run change detection at
the appropriate times). That said, developers can still use DI in
`bootstrapApplication` to provide an `NgZone` implementation instead,
it's just not specifically available in the
`provideZoneChangeDetection` function.
4e098fa8a7 refactor(core): move Zone providers to a single provider function (#49373)
This commit moves the providers for `NgZone`-based change detection to a
single provider function. This function is currently called by default
in all places where `NgZone` was provided
(`bootstrapApplication`, `bootstrapModule`, and `TestBed`).
When we want to make Angular applications zoneless by default, we
can make a public provider method that has to be used in order to enable
the zone change detection features. When this method is not called,
Angular would use `NoopNgZone` by default and not initialize any
subscriptions to the `NgZone` stability events.
Side note: There are actually two places that `NgZone` is provided for `TestBed`
(providers in `compileTestModule` and `BrowserTestingModule`). This
likely doesn't need to be in both locations.
* Adding a backwards-compatibility layer for calls to `updateTypeParameterDeclaration`.
* Making `LView` generic in order to make it easier to type the context based on the usage. Currently the context can be 4 different types which coupled with stricter type checking would required a lot of extra casting all over `core`.
* Fixing a bunch of miscellaneous type errors.
* Removing assertions of `ReferenceEntry.isDefinition` in a few of the language service tests. The field isn't returned by TS anymore and we weren't using it for anything.
* Resolving in error in the language service that was caused by TS attempting to parse HTML files when we try to open them. Previous TS was silently setting them as `ScriptKind.Unknown` and ignoring the errors, but now it throws. I've worked around it by setting them as `ScriptKind.JSX`.
68597bb0ca feat(bazel): speed up dev-turnaround by bundling types only when packaging (#45405)
Speeds up the dev-turnaround by only bundling types when packaging. Currently
bundling occurs for all the `ng_module` targets in devmode.
This has various positive benefits:
* Avoidance of this rather slower operation in development
* Makes APF-built packages also handle types for `ts_library` targets consistently.
* Allows us to ensure APF entry-points have `d.ts` _always_ bundled (working with ESM
module resolution in TypeScript -- currently experimental)
* Allows us to remove the secondary `package.json` files from APF (maybe APF v14? - seems
low-impact). This would clean-up the APF even more and fix resolution issues (like in Vite)
27b4af7240 fix(compiler-cli): full side-effectful registration of NgModules with ids (#45024)
Angular contains an NgModule registry, which allows a user to declare
NgModules with string ids and retrieve them via those ids, using the
`getNgModuleById` API.
Previously, we attempted to structure this registration in a clever fashion
to allow for tree-shaking of registered NgModules (that is, those with ids).
This sort of worked due to the accidental alignment of behaviors from the
different tree-shakers involved. However, this trick relies on the
generation of `.ngfactory` files and how they're specifically processed in
various bundling scenarios. We intend to remove `.ngfactory` files, hence
we can no longer rely on them in this way.
The correct solution here is to recognize that `@NgModule({id})` is
inherently declaring a global side-effect, and such classes should not
really be eligible for tree-shaking in the first place. This commit removes
all the old registration machinery, and standardizes on generating a side-
effectful call to `registerNgModuleType` for NgModules that have ids.
There is some risk here that NgModules with unnecessary `id`s may not
tree-shake as a result of this change, whereas they would have in previous
circumstances. The fix here should be to remove the `id` if it's not needed.
Specifying an `id` is a request that the NgModule be retained regardless of
any other references, in case it is later looked up by string id.
39c614c438 fix(core): flush delayed scoping queue while setting up TestBed (#44814)
Previously, some NgModules that were added to the delayed scoping queue, never got removed from the queue before unit test execution. That resulted in some components (declared in those NgModules) missing their scope (which components/directives/pipes were matched).
This commit adds the logic to invoke delayed scoping queue flushing before starting a test to avoid missing/incomplete scopes for Components used in a test.
bb9ff6003c test: remove view-engine-only tests (#43884)
This commit removes most tests that were designated as only covering View
Engine code. It also removes tag filters from CI and local commands to run
tests.
In a few cases (such as with the packages/compiler tests), this tag was
improperly applied, and certain test cases have been added back running in
Ivy mode.
This commit also empties `@angular/compiler/testing` as it is no longer
necessary (this is safe since compiler packages are not public API). It can
b930547ffd fix(core): support cyclic metadata in TestBed overrides (#44215)
The TestBed APIs to override metadata would crash when the metadata
contained objects with cyclic references. Metadata overrides use the
JSON serialized representation of a value to compare objects, which
throws an error if the value has cyclic references. This commit avoids
the error by replacing multiple occurrences of the same object using
a unique string representation for the object.
ea61ec2562 feat(core): support TypeScript 4.4 (#43281)
Adds support for TypeScript 4.4. High-level overview of the changes made in this PR:
* Bumps the various packages to `typescript@4.4.2` and `tslib@2.3.0`.
* The `useUnknownInCatchVariables` compiler option has been disabled so that we don't have to cast error objects explicitly everywhere.
* TS now passes in a third argument to the `__spreadArray` call inside child class constructors. I had to update a couple of places in the runtime and ngcc to be able to pick up the calls correctly.
* TS now generates code like `(0, foo)(arg1, arg2)` for imported function calls. I had to update a few of our tests to account for it. See https://github.com/microsoft/TypeScript/pull/44624.
* Our `ngtsc` test setup calls the private `matchFiles` function from TS. I had to update our usage, because a new parameter was added.
* There was one place where we were setting the readonly `hasTrailingComma` property. I updated the usage to pass in the value when constructing the object instead.
* Some browser types were updated which meant that I had to resolve some trivial type errors.
* The downlevel decorators tranform was running into an issue where the Closure synthetic comments were being emitted twice. I've worked around it by recreating the class declaration node instead of cloning it.
cd2d82a91a fix(core): associate the NgModule scope for an overridden component (#42817)
When using `TestBed.overrideComponent`, the overridden component would
incorrectly lose access to its NgModule's declaration scope if the
NgModule had been imported into the testing NgModule as a
`ModuleWithProviders`, e.g. using a `forRoot` call.
The issue occurred as the `TestBed` compiler did not consider NgModules
that had been imported as a `ModuleWithProviders` when associating
NgModules with component overrides. This caused the overridden component
to be compiled standalone, meaning that it does not have access to
its NgModule's declarations. This commit extends the logic for
traversing the NgModule graph to also consider `ModuleWithProviders`
imports.
0f23f7343e fix(core): error in TestBed if module is reset mid-compilation in ViewEngine (#42669)
When `TestBed.compileComponents` is called under ViewEngine, we kick off a compilation and return a promise that resolves once the compilation is done. In most cases the consumer doesn't _have_ to await the returned promise, unless their components have external resources.
The problem is that the test could be over by the time the promise has resolved, in which case we still cache the factory of the test module. This becomes a problem if another compilation is triggered right afterwards, because it'll see that we still have a `_moduleFactory` and it won't recreate the factory.
These changes resolve the issue by saving a reference to the module type that is being compiled and checking against it when the promise resolves.
Note that while this problem was discovered while trying to roll out the new test module teardown behavior in the Components repo (https://github.com/angular/components/pull/23070), it has been there for a long time. The new test behavior made it more apparent.
873229f24b feat(core): add opt-in test module teardown configuration (#42566)
We currently have two long-standing issues related to how `TestBed` tests are torn down:
1. The dynamically-created test module isn't going to be destroyed, preventing the `ngOnDestroy` hooks on providers from running and keeping the component `style` nodes in the DOM.
2. The test root elements aren't going to be removed from the DOM. Instead, they will be removed whenever another test component is created.
By themselves, these issues are easy to resolve, but given how long they've been around, there are a lot of unit tests out there that depend on the broken behavior.
These changes address the issues by introducing APIs that allow users to opt into the correct test teardown behavior either at the application level via `TestBed.initTestEnvironment` or the test suite level via `TestBed.configureTestingModule`.
At the moment, the new teardown behavior is opt-in, but the idea is that we'll eventually make it opt-out before removing the configuration altogether.
c8f056beb6 fix(core): ensure TestBed is not instantiated before override provider (#38717)
There is an inconsistency in overrideProvider behaviour. Testing documentation says
(https://angular.io/guide/testing-components-basics#createcomponent) that all override...
methods throw error if TestBed is already instantiated. However overrideProvider doesn't throw any error, but (same as
other override... methods) doesn't replace providers if TestBed is instantiated. Add TestBed instantiation check to
overrideProvider method to make it consistent.
BREAKING CHANGE:
If you call `TestBed.overrideProvider` after TestBed initialization, provider overrides are not applied. This
behavior is consistent with other override methods (such as `TestBed.overrideDirective`, etc) but they
throw an error to indicate that, when the check was missing in the `TestBed.overrideProvider` function.
Now calling `TestBed.overrideProvider` after TestBed initialization also triggers an
error, thus there is a chance that some tests (where `TestBed.overrideProvider` is
called after TestBed initialization) will start to fail and require updates to move `TestBed.overrideProvider` calls
before TestBed initialization is completed.
435a28e937 fix(core): fake_async_fallback should have the same logic with fake-async (#37680)
PR https://github.com/angular/angular/pull/37523 failed when trying to use `rxjs delay` operator
inside `fakeAsync`, and the reasons are:
1. we need to import `rxjs-fake-async` patch to make the integration work.
2. since in `angular` repo, the bazel target `/tools/testing:node` not using `zone-testing` bundle,
instead it load `zone-spec` packages seperately, so it causes one issue which is the `zone.js/testing/fake-async`
package is not loaded, we do have a fallback logic under `packages/core/testing` calles `fake_async_fallback`,
but the logic is out of date with `fake-async` under `zone.js` package.
So this PR, I updated the content of `fake_async_fallback` to make it consistent with
`fake-async`. And I will make another PR to try to remove the `fallback` logic.
0a1a989fa9 perf(core): avoid recursive scope recalculation when TestBed.overrideModule is used (#35454)
Currently if TestBed detects that TestBed.overrideModule was used for module X, transitive scopes are recalculated recursively for all modules that X imports and previously calculated data (stored in cache) is ignored. This behavior was introduced in https://github.com/angular/angular/pull/33787 to fix stale transitive scopes issue (cache was not updated if module overrides are present).
The perf issue comes from a "diamond" problem, where module X is overridden which imports modules A and B, which both import module C. Under previous logic, module C gets its transitive deps recomputed multiple times, during the recompute for both A and B. For deep graphs and big common/shared modules this can be super costly.
This commit updates the logic to recalculate ransitive scopes for the overridden module, while keeping previously calculated scopes of other modules untouched.
5aabe93abe refactor(ivy): Switch styling to new reconcile algorithm (#34616)
NOTE: This change must be reverted with previous deletes so that it code remains in build-able state.
This change deletes old styling code and replaces it with a simplified styling algorithm.
The mental model for the new algorithm is:
- Create a linked list of styling bindings in the order of priority. All styling bindings ere executed in compiled order and than a linked list of bindings is created in priority order.
- Flush the style bindings at the end of `advance()` instruction. This implies that there are two flush events. One at the end of template `advance` instruction in the template. Second one at the end of `hostBindings` `advance` instruction when processing host bindings (if any).
- Each binding instructions effectively updates the string to represent the string at that location. Because most of the bindings are additive, this is a cheap strategy in most cases. In rare cases the strategy requires removing tokens from the styling up to this point. (We expect that to be rare case)S Because, the bindings are presorted in the order of priority, it is safe to resume the processing of the concatenated string from the last change binding.
5b864ede13 fix(ivy): TestBed not unwrapping imports array function when overriding provider (#34629)
Fixes an error that is thrown when a provider is overridden in `TestBed`, if the module definition of one of the imported modules uses a function for the `imports` that is set via `setNgModuleScope`. The problem was that we have a `for...of` loop that assumes that the imports are an array, but they can also be a function. This was handled correctly in other places, but this one was missed.
Note that the above-mentioned error is only thrown at runtime when the code is transpiled to es6. In es5 TS generates a call to a helper that handles the error silently so the attached unit test only fails in es6.
fd83d9479a fix(ivy): avoid using stale cache in TestBed if module overrides are defined (#33787)
NgModule compilation in JIT mode (that is also used in TestBed) caches module scopes on NgModule defs (using `transitiveCompileScopes` field). Module overrides (defined via TestBed.overrideModule) may invalidate this data by adding/removing items in `declarations` list. This commit forces TestBed to recalculate transitive scopes in case module overrides are present, so TestBed always gets the most up-to-date information.
eece138fa7 fix(ivy): provider override via TestBed should remove old providers from the list (#33706)
While overriding providers in Ivy TestBed (via TestBed.overrideProvider call), the old providers were retained in the list, since the override takes precedence. However, presence of providers in the list might have side-effect: if a provider has the `ngOnDestroy` lifecycle hook, this hook will be registered and invoked later (when component is destroyed). This commit updates TestBed logic to clear provider list by removing the ones which have overrides.
1ebe172c2e fix(ivy): Handle overrides for {providedIn: AModule} in R3TestBed (#33606)
This issue was found when debugging a test failure that was using lazy
loaded modules with the router. When doing this, the router calls
`NgModuleFactory.create` for the loaded module. This module gets a new
injector so the overrides provided in TestBed are not applied unless the
Injectable is in the providers list (which is not the case for
{providedIn...} Injectables).
63256b511a fix(ivy): Only restore registered modules if user compiles modules with TestBed (#32944)
There are a couple scenarios that are problematic and need special
handling:
1. A user has a custom implementation of lazy-loaded modules, sets some
provider overrides, then compiles the module so it can be loaded. In a
follow-up test, the user sets different overrides for the module and
then compiles. This is problematic because we need to be sure the module
registered in the first test is not used, so we need to clear it out of
the modules list in `ng_module_factory_registration`.
2. A user has a similar lazy-loaded module factory implementation but
relies on the module being registered automatically. This can happen,
for example, as a side effect of importing the ngfactory file.
fa79f51645 refactor(ivy): update the compiler to emit $localize tags (#31609)
This commit changes the Angular compiler (ivy-only) to generate `$localize`
tagged strings for component templates that use `i18n` attributes.
BREAKING CHANGE
Since `$localize` is a global function, it must be included in any applications
that use i18n. This is achieved by importing the `@angular/localize` package
into an appropriate bundle, where it will be executed before the renderer
needs to call `$localize`. For CLI based projects, this is best done in
the `polyfills.ts` file.
```ts
import '@angular/localize';
```
For non-CLI applications this could be added as a script to the index.html
file or another suitable script file.
5e0f982961 feat(ivy): use i18n locale data to determine the plural form of ICU expressions (#29249)
Plural ICU expressions depend on the locale (different languages have different plural forms). Until now the locale was hard coded as `en-US`.
For compatibility reasons, if you use ivy with AOT and bootstrap your app with `bootstrapModule` then the `LOCALE_ID` token will be set automatically for ivy, which is then used to get the correct plural form.
If you use JIT, you need to define the `LOCALE_ID` provider on the module that you bootstrap.
For `TestBed` you can use either `configureTestingModule` or `overrideProvider` to define that provider.
If you don't use the compat mode and start your app with `renderComponent` you need to call `ɵsetLocaleId` manually to define the `LOCALE_ID` before bootstrap. We expect this to change once we start adding the new i18n APIs, so don't rely on this function (there's a reason why it's a private export).
deb77bd3df feat(ivy): TestBed support for reusing non-exported components (#30578)
This is a new feature of the Ivy TestBed.
A common user pattern is to test one component with another. This is
commonly done by creating a `TestFixture` component which exercises the
main component under test.
This pattern is more difficult if the component under test is declared in an
NgModule but not exported. In this case, overriding the module is necessary.
In g3 (and View Engine), it's possible to use an NgSummary to override the
recompilation of a component, and depend on its AOT compiled factory. The
way this is implemented, however, specifying a summary for a module
effectively overrides much of the TestBed's other behavior. For example, the
following is legal:
```typescript
TestBed.configureTestingModule({
  declarations: [FooCmp, TestFixture],
  imports: [FooModule],
  aotSummaries: [FooModuleNgSummary],
});
```
Here, `FooCmp` is declared in both the testing module and in the imported
`FooModule`. However, because the summary is provided, `FooCmp` is not
compiled within the context of the testing module, but _is_ made available
for `TestFixture` to use, even if it wasn't originally exported from
`FooModule`.
This pattern breaks in Ivy - because summaries are a no-op, this amounts
to a true double declaration of `FooCmp` which raises an error.
Fixing this in user code is possible, but is difficult to do in an
automated or backwards compatible way. An alternative solution is
implemented in this PR.
This PR attempts to capture the user intent of the following previously
unsupported configuration:
```typescript
TestBed.configureTestingModule({
  declarations: [FooCmp, TestFixture],
  imports: [FooModule],
});
```
Note that this is the same as the configuration above in Ivy, as the
`aotSummaries` value provided has no effect.
The user intent here is interpreted as follows:
1) `FooCmp` is a pre-existing component that's being used in the test
   (via import of `FooModule`). It may or may not be exported by this
   module.
2) `FooCmp` should be part of the testing module's scope. That is, it
   should be visible to `TestFixture`. This is because it's listed in
   `declarations`.
This feature effectively makes the `TestBed` testing module special. It's
able to declare components without compiling them, if they're already
compiled (or configured to be compiled) in the imports. And crucially, the
behavior matches the first example with the summary, making Ivy backwards
compatible with View Engine for tests that use summaries.
a96976e88f fix(core): remove deprecated TestBed.deprecatedOverrideProvider API (#30576)
BREAKING CHANGE
In PR #19558, we fixed a bug in `TestBed.overrideProvider` where
eager providers were not being instantiated correctly. However,
it turned out that since this bug had been around for quite a bit,
many apps were relying on the broken behavior where the providers
would not be instantiated. To assist in the transition, the
`TestBed.deprecatedOverrideProvider` method was temporarily
introduced to mimic the old behavior so that apps would have a
longer time period to migrate their code.
2 years and 3 versions later, it is time to remove the temporary
method. This commit removes `TestBed.deprecatedOverrideProvider`
altogether. Any usages of `TestBed.deprecatedOverrideProvider`
should be replaced with `TestBed.overrideProvider`. This may mean
that providers that were not created before will now be instantiated,
which could mean that your tests need to provide more mocks or stubs
for the dependencies of the newly instantiated providers.
f9bb53a761 fix(ivy): allow TestBed.createComponent to create components in isolation (#29981)
Prior to this change, components created via TestBed.createComponent in the same test were placed into the same root context, which caused problems in conjunction with fixture.autoDetectChanges usage in the same test. Specifically, change detection was triggered immediately for created component (starting from the 2nd one) even if it was not required/desired. This commit makes Ivy and VE behavior consistent: now every component created via TestBed.createComponent is isolated from each other. Current solution uses host element id naming convention, which is not ideal, but helps avoid public API surface changes at this point (we might revisit this approach later).
In order to be backwards compatible with View Engine, Ivy should log
errors by default in the TestBed error handler rather than re-throwing
This logging approach has issues (for both VE and Ivy) because it can allow
7b27009e20 fix(ivy): fix proliferation of provider overrides for modules (#29571)
When an @NgModule is imported more than once in the testing module (for
example it appears in the imports of more than one module, or if it's
literally listed multiple times), then TestBed had a bug where the
providers for the module would be overridden many times.
This alone was problematic but would not break tests. However, the original
value of the providers field of the ngInjectorDef was saved each time, and
restored in the same order. Thus, if the provider array was [X], and
overrides were applied twice, then the override array would become
[X, X'] and then [X, X', X, X']. However, on the second override the state
[X, X'] would be stored as original. The array would then be restored to
[X] and then [X, X'].
Each test, therefore, would continue to double the size of the providers
array for the module, eventually exhausting the browser's memory.
This commit adds a Set to track when overrides have been applied to a module
and refrain from applying them more than once.
Prior to this change, Ivy version of TestBed was not designed to support the logic to avoid recompilations - most of the Components/Directives/Pipes were recompiled for each test, even if there were no overrides defined for a given Type. Additional checks to avoid recompilation were introduced in one of the previous commits (0244a2433e), but there were still some corner cases that required attention. In order to support the necessary logic better, Ivy TestBed was rewritten/refactored. Main results of this rewrite are:
* no recompilation for Components/Directives/Pipes without overrides
* the logic to restore state between tests (isolate tests) was improved
* transitive scopes calculation no longer performs recompilation (it works with compiled defs)
As a result of these changes we see reduction in memory consumption (3.5-4x improvement) and pefromance increase (4-4.5x improvement).
17f7bdbd60 build: update zone.js to 0.9.0 (#28219)
The API changes are due to enabling strict checks in TypeScript (via `strict: true`).
The payload size changes in `polyfills.js` are due to more browser APIs being patched in recent versions (e.g. `fetch`, `customElement v1`).
