+# Choosing the right Linux device management solution
+
+You've established why [Linux device management matters](https://fleetdm.com/articles/why-enterprise-linux-is-important-in-2026), built [the business case](https://fleetdm.com/articles/business-vase-for-managing-linux-devices), and [defined your requirements](https://fleetdm.com/articles/how-to-define-your-Linux-device-management-needs). Now it's time to choose a platform. This article provides a structured framework for evaluating Linux device management solutions, including the business and technical requirements to prioritize and a concrete scorecard for comparing vendors.
+
+## Start with requirements, not features
+
+Vendor demos are designed to impress. Every platform looks capable in a controlled environment. The risk is choosing a solution based on what a vendor shows rather than what your organization needs.
+
+Before scheduling a single demo, revisit the requirements you defined in [the previous article](https://fleetdm.com/articles/how-to-define-your-Linux-device-management-needs). Map each requirement to a specific capability. If you defined "Level 2 – Security and System Baselines" as your target on the maturity model, your evaluation should weight baseline enforcement, encryption verification, and compliance reporting more heavily than zero-touch provisioning or self-service app catalogs.
+
+This discipline prevents scope creep during evaluation. It also gives you a defensible explanation for your decision when leadership or procurement asks why you chose one platform over another.
+
+## Business requirements
+
+Technical capability matters, but it isn't the only factor. Business requirements determine whether a platform is viable for your organization over the long term.
+
+### Total cost of ownership
+
+Per-device pricing is only the starting point. Calculate the total cost of ownership across licensing, deployment labor, training, and ongoing maintenance. Some platforms offer low per-device fees but gate critical features behind enterprise tiers. Others include everything in one price but require significant upfront investment in infrastructure.
+
+Ask vendors directly:
+- What is the per-device cost at your current fleet size and at 2x and 5x that size?
+- Which features are included at each pricing tier?
+- What are the infrastructure costs for self-hosted deployments?
+- Are there additional costs for support, training, or professional services?
+
+### Vendor viability and support
+
+A device management platform is a long-term commitment. Evaluate the vendor's financial stability, product roadmap transparency, and support quality. Open-source projects with active communities and transparent development histories provide a level of assurance that proprietary vendors often cannot match.
+
+Test support quality during the evaluation process. Submit real technical questions and measure response time and depth. The quality of pre-sales support is a reasonable proxy for what you'll receive post-purchase.
+
+### Deployment flexibility
+
+Some organizations require self-hosted deployments for data residency, regulatory compliance, or air-gapped environments. Others prefer fully managed cloud deployments to reduce operational overhead. Many need both options at different stages of their adoption.
+
+Evaluate whether the platform supports your deployment model without feature restrictions. A self-hosted deployment that lacks features available in the cloud version isn't true deployment flexibility.
+
+### Integration with existing tools
+
+Device management doesn't operate in isolation. The platform must integrate with your identity provider (Okta, Active Directory, LDAP), your SIEM, your ticketing system, and your configuration management workflows. Evaluate the quality and completeness of the API. A platform with a comprehensive REST API provides more integration flexibility than one that relies on pre-built connectors for specific tools.

+## Technical requirements
+
+These are the capabilities that directly affect how well a platform manages Linux devices day-to-day.
+
+### Multi-platform support
+
+Most organizations don't manage Linux devices in isolation. They also manage macOS and Windows. A platform that handles all three from a single console eliminates the tool sprawl and fragmented visibility described in [the business case article](https://fleetdm.com/articles/business-vase-for-managing-linux-devices).
+
+Evaluate how deep Linux support actually is. Some vendors list Linux as a supported platform but provide only basic inventory and patch management. True Linux management includes configuration enforcement, software deployment across package managers, script execution, and compliance reporting at parity with macOS and Windows.
+
+### Distribution coverage
+
+Linux is not one operating system. It is hundreds of distributions with different package managers, init systems, and configuration conventions. A platform that supports Ubuntu but not RHEL, or Debian but not Fedora, may leave gaps in your fleet.
+
+Define which distributions your organization uses today and which you may adopt. Evaluate whether the platform supports them natively or requires workarounds.
+
+### Enrollment and onboarding
+
+Getting devices into the management platform is the first operational hurdle. Evaluate the enrollment experience for both new devices and devices already in use.
+
+Key questions:
+- Can existing, in-use Linux devices be enrolled without reimaging?
+- Is enrollment self-service, IT-assisted, or fully automated?
+- What does the end-user experience look like during enrollment?
+- How does the platform handle migration from an existing tool or collection of scripts?
+
+A difficult enrollment process will stall adoption regardless of how capable the platform is once devices are managed.
+
+### Configuration management and drift detection
+
+Linux users frequently have elevated system access. Configurations drift. A management platform must detect drift from defined baselines and either alert or auto-remediate.
+
+Evaluate whether the platform supports:
+- Declarative configuration enforcement
+- Drift detection and reporting
+- Automated remediation without end-user disruption
+- Version-controlled configuration management (GitOps)

+### Software deployment
+
+Linux software deployment is more complex than on macOS or Windows. Multiple package formats (`.deb`, `.rpm`, Flatpak, Snap), multiple package managers (`apt`, `dnf`, `zypper`), and the possibility of custom internal repositories all factor in.

+Evaluate whether the platform can:
+- Deploy software across different package formats and distributions
+- Manage custom repositories
+- Enforce approved software catalogs
+- Report on installed software and versions fleet-wide
+
+### Visibility and reporting
+
+The ability to answer questions about your fleet in real time is foundational. Every level of the maturity model depends on accurate, current device data.
+
+Evaluate reporting speed and depth:
+- How quickly does the platform reflect the current state of a device?
+- Can you query arbitrary device attributes, or are you limited to predefined reports?
+- Can device data be exported to external systems for analysis?
+- Does reporting cover hardware, software, OS configuration, and security posture?
+
+### Security capabilities
+
+At a minimum, the platform should support:
+- Disk encryption verification
+- Firewall configuration enforcement
+- Vulnerability detection based on installed software
+- USB and peripheral device policy
+- Remote lock and wipe
+
+Evaluate whether these features work on Linux at the same level as macOS and Windows, or whether Linux is treated as a second-class platform.
+
+## Evaluation scorecard
+
+Use this scorecard to compare platforms systematically. Score each criterion on a scale of 1–5, where 1 means the platform does not meet the requirement and 5 means it fully meets or exceeds the requirement. Weight each category according to your organization's priorities.

+Customize the weights based on your defined requirements. An organization targeting Level 1 (Monitoring and Auditing) on the maturity model will weight visibility and reporting more heavily. An organization targeting Level 4 (Zero-Touch Provisioning) will weight enrollment, configuration management, and software deployment more heavily.
+
+## Running the evaluation
+
+### Define the evaluation team
+
+Include representatives from IT operations, security, and at least one Linux end user. End-user input is critical: a platform that IT loves but end users resist will fail in practice.
+
+### Set a fixed evaluation timeline
+
+Open-ended evaluations lose momentum. Set a timeline of four to six weeks. Define milestones: initial vendor screening, hands-on testing, scoring, and final decision.
+
+### Test with real workloads
+
+Run the platform against your actual fleet, or a representative subset of it. Deploy real configurations, enroll real devices, and test real workflows. Vendor-supplied demo environments are not representative of production conditions.
+
+### Score independently, then align
+
+Have each evaluator score the platforms independently using the scorecard before meeting to discuss. This prevents groupthink and surfaces disagreements early.
+
+## Making the decision
+
+The platform with the highest weighted score on your evaluation scorecard is the strongest candidate. But scores are a tool, not a verdict. Consider factors that are harder to quantify:
+
+- **Community and ecosystem.** Platforms with active communities and transparent development provide long-term confidence. Open-source projects let you verify claims independently.
+- **Alignment with your team's workflows.** A platform that supports GitOps workflows may be more natural for teams that already manage infrastructure as code. A platform that relies exclusively on GUI workflows may suit teams without Git experience.
+- **Cultural fit with your Linux users.** Linux users value transparency and control. A platform built on open-source technology with a lightweight agent and clear data collection policies will face less resistance than a proprietary, opaque alternative.
